Remember the SABBATH day, to keep it HOLY. (Exodus 20:8 NKJ)
• Sabbath means to rest.
• Rest means to cease from work, to relax, refresh oneself, or recover strength.
• Holy means consecrate unto God. For 2 reasons: Rest and Worship!
Six days you shall labor and do all your work but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and RESTED THE SEVENTH DAY. (Exodus 20:9-10 NKJ)
• If the Lord Himself rested, how much should I?
Therefore the LORD BLESSED THE SABBATH DAY and HALLOWED IT (Exodus 20:11 NKJ)
• He blessed that day of rest for us. He Hallowed it or made it holy. He set it apart for us to Rest and Worship.
• The principles of rest and worship are to be applied to our relationship with God.
Why did God commanded us to rest and worship?
#1: REST & WORSHIP: ACCESS TO GOD’S SUPERNATURAL PROVISION
Daily, for 5 days they would gather Manna. That was God’s provision. But on the 6th day, God was going give them more than enough. God’s supernatural provision.
He told them, “This is what the Lord commanded: Tomorrow will be a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath day set apart for the Lord. So bake or boil as much as you want today, and set aside what is left for tomorrow.” So they put some aside until morning, just as Moses had commanded. And in the morning the leftover food was wholesome and good, without maggots or odor. (Exodus 16:23-24 NLT)
God’s Promise: If you rest and dedicate this ONE day a week to me, you will have access to my supernatural provision!
Chic Fil A is a Christian owned and operated company.
“Closing our business on Sunday, the Lord’s Day, is our way of honoring God and showing our loyalty to Him,”
“My brother Dan and I closed our first restaurant on the first Sunday after we opened in 1946, and my children have committed to closing our restaurants on Sundays long after I’m gone. I believe God honors our decision and sets before us unexpected opportunities to do greater work for Him because of our loyalty.” (Founder: S. Truett Cathy)
Our culture of care: “our policies, practices and benefits support this goal. At our restaurants, we’re known for being closed on Sunday, to allow Operators and their team members to enjoy a day of REST, be with their families and loved ones, and WORSHIP if they choose.”
• Chick-fil-A has been experiencing a 14% increase every year.
• From a net worth of $1.1 bn in 2000 to $16.7 bn in 2021.
#2 REST & WORSHIP: GIFTS FROM GOD
Some of the people went out anyway on the seventh day, but they found no food. The Lord asked Moses, “How long will these people refuse to obey my commands and instructions? They must realize that the Sabbath is the LORD’S GIFT TO YOU. (Exodus 16:27-29 NLT)
Why would God call The Sabbath, the day of rest a gift?
• God calls it a gift because wanted the Israelites to know that they were no longer slaves but His children.
• Isn’t that what God calls you and I: “His children, A royal priesthood”?
#3 REST & WORSHIP OR DIE
You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. (Exodus 31:14 NKJ)
• God is serious about your rest, because He is serious about His relationship with you. Without Him you die!
• When you don’t rest and worship, you are disconnected with God. When you are disconnected with God, you die!
• The goal of the sabbath is not death but relationship.
“The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!” (Mark 2:27-28 NLT)
• Resting and Worshipping meet the needs of people. Without them, people die!
for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was REFRESHED. (Exodus 31:17 NKJ)
• The Hebrew word for refresh means: To Take Breath.
• For 6 days, God breathed out: “Let there be”
• On the 7th day He breathed in, He took breath and was refreshed.
• On the 7th day, God wants you to breathe in. Rest and be Refreshed.
