Contentment: The Secret of More Than Enough (Part 1)
November 16, 2025
Contentment—a word that’s easy to preach about but hard to live out.
Definition of contentment: A state of peaceful satisfaction, not needing more to feel fulfilled.
- Contentment isn’t laziness or lack of ambition—it’s being secure in God’s sufficiency rather than enslaved by our desires.
OPENING SCRIPTURE:
Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, LET US BE CONTENT. (1 Timothy 6:6-8 NLT)
- Godliness is not a business model– it’s a lifestyle of trust in God.
- That true wealth does not come from what you have in your hand but what you have in your heart.
#1 Contentment Guards Our Hearts From Greed
- Contention is a place where Greed is birthed.
- CONTENT-ION
Contention: a quarrel, a dispute, a competition
A person who is in contention is stuck in an internal struggle. This Bible calls this internal struggle covetousness.
“You shall not covet” – (Exodus 20:17 NKJ)
- Covet : desiring something that does not belong to you and desiring more and more.
“Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” (Luke 12:15 NKJ)
Let your conduct be WITHOUT COVETOUSNESS; BE CONTENT with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5 NKJ)
Contentment is that secret place where you know that God’s presence is ABIDING
#2 Contentment Strengthens Our Faith in God’s Provision
- Contentment is a secret place where you can rely on God’s provision
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to BE CONTENT: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. (Philippians 4:11,12 NKJ)
Paul: I’m not in contention. I have learned to be content.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13 NKJ)
- Paul learned that his strength came from Christ, not from circumstance.
Contentment is about faith in God- trusting that He is the provider even when you don’t see the full provision.
# 3 Contentment Produces Peace and Joy for Every Season
“Even though the fig trees have no blossoms… yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation!” (Habakkuk 3:17–18 NLT)
- Joy isn’t the absence of problems—it’s the presence of perspective.
- Joy isn’t about possessions—it’s about presence. The presence of God fills the gap that stuff never can.
- Contentment says, “Even if I don’t have everything I want, I still have everything I need in God.”
In Christ we have more than enough.
I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly (John 10:10 NKJ)
- Christ is not just enough…He is more than enough!
