God’s Top Ten – Part 1 (06/06/2021)

June 12, 2021

God has a top 10 list. It’s called The Ten Commandments.

  • The ten commandments is not a list of God’s don’ts – Thou shalt nots
  • The ten commandments is a list of God’s principles about developing relationships. Relationship with God and relationship with others.

And God spoke all these words, saying: AM THE LORD YOUR GOD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. YOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME. (Exodus 20:2,3 NKJ)

That’s the very first commandment. Very important, because it sets the stage for the rest.

POINT #1: A RELATIONSHIP BASED ON WHO HE IS

  • I want you to pay attention to the very first statement from God is: “I am the Lord your God”
  • It is a reminder that the commandment and whatever else that comes after hinges upon that statement: I am the Lord your God. It’s that relationship!

God’s number one priority is a relationship with us.

  • As matter of fact, He created Adam and Eve for relationship. (Gen 1:26, 27)

“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness”

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them”.

  • They cannot be altered; they cannot be changed.
  • Our identity, our genetic makeup, our DNA carry His image and His likeness.
  • His relationship with you can never be altered or changed.
  • His relationship with you is based on His unconditional love for you
  • The only thing that can break that relationship is sin.

But YOUR INIQUITIES have SEPARATED you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear. (Isaiah 59:2 NKJ)

  • Sin will always separate you from God and break that relationship.
  • It was for this broken relationship that He sent His Son.

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. (John 3:16-17)

  • God did not send His Son to condemn you for this broken relationship, but to restore this broken relationship.

POINT #2: A RELATIONSHIP WHERE GOD ONLY IS WORSHIPPED

“You shall have no other gods BEFORE ME.”

  • That commandment hinges upon our relationship with God.
  • Anything and everything that comes before or even after God will become a god (little g)
  • God will not share that relationship with anyone or anything else.
  • The words “before me” from the Hebrew translation says “other than me”, or besides me.

am the Lord, and there is no other; There is no God besides Me. (Isaiah 45:5 NKJ)

POINT #3: THE STRENGTH OF THAT RELATIONSHIP DEPENDS ON US

  • The strength and depth of that relationship between God and you depend on you.

“You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.” (Exodus 20:19 NKJ)

21 So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was. (Exodus 20:21 NKJ)

  • The people wanted to strength and depth of their relationship with God to be a by-product of what Moses’ personal relationship with God.
  • The strength and depth of that relationship between God and you depend on you.
  • Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (James 4:8)
