“And God spoke all these words, saying:” (Exodus 20:1 NKJ)
“YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY. (Exodus 20:14 NKJ)

  • Adultery is defined as sexual intercourse between a married person and another person who is not his or her spouse.
  • It is for our own protection God set this standard.
  • Jesus explained the 7th commandment in Sermon on the Mount.

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. (Matthew 5:27-30 NKJ)

  • He expanded the definition of adultery.
  • Jesus defines adultery as not the final act but as lust from heart.
  • Sexual immorality an equal opportunity sin: young and old, male or female, married or single.
  • The Greek translation for sexual immorality is Porneia.
  • Adultery, sexual immorality destroys marriages, destroys the family unit and ultimately destroys lives.

Why is sexual purity so important to God? ONENESS.

  • ONENESS can only be achieved in a marriage between a man and woman. The original intent of this building block was the building and the survival of the human civilization starting with the family unit!

Therefore a man shall LEAVE his father and mother and be JOINED to his wife, and they shall become ONE FLESH (ONENESS) (Genesis 2:24 NKJ)

  • God’s plan for marriage goes beyond avoiding an affair or divorce.
  • How do we maintain that ONENESS in marriage?

ACTION #1: STAY IN THE GAME.
To maintain ONENESS in marriage, both partners must make a decision: To stay in the game. From the day marriage vows were exchanged all the way to the end.
ONENESS requires commitment.

ACTION #2: TRAIN YOUR EYES

  • ONENESS is achieved when your eyes are trained to be in the in game- either on your spouse or the ball.
  • Your eyes provide direct access to your soul: Your Mind, Your Will, Your Emotion
  • A wandering eye leads to a wandering soul in the enemy’s playbook.

Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you (Proverbs 4:25 NKJ)
I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me. (Psalm 101:3 NKJ)

ACTION #3: TRAIN YOUR THOUGHTS

  • Oneness is achieve when our thoughts are harnessed by the Holy Spirit.

The key is to Control and Replace the input- what goes in. Here’s what Paul says:
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8 NLT)

ACTION #4: TRANSPARENCY

  • Part of being transparent is recognizing we can all be vulnerable.
  • You are most vulnerable when: Hungry. Angry. Lonely. Tired (HALT)
  • The key is to recognize those signs and develop safeguards in your marriage.
  • Safeguards are practical ways to be accountable to one another.
  • The concept of ONENESS in marriage based on accountability with one another.

For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, And in a multitude of counselors there is safety (Proverbs 24:6 NKJ)

ACTION #5: FOCUS ON THE POSTIVES AND NOT ON THE NEGATIVES

  • Find something positive to say about each other. You can always find good when you are looking for it.
  • It’s true in marriage. It’s true in church. It’s true in life. What you seek, you find!
  • If you SEARCH FOR GOOD, you will FIND FAVOR; but if you SEARCH FOR EVIL, IT WILL FIND YOU! (Proverbs 11:27 NLT)

ACTION #6: RUN

RUN FROM SEXUAL SIN! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. (1 Corinthians 6:18 NLT)
The best way to deal with sexual immorality is to run.
