Surrender (04/14/2019)

Statement: I know we’re all familiar with the concept surrendering to God from a salvation standpoint. Today we will look at it from a different angle: Whose side you are on?

  • The removal of shoes in business transactions: transfer of or surrendering of rights from our one person to the next.
  • Without the removal of sandals there is no redemption
  • The removal of sandals or shoes denotes act honor, respect and surrender
  • The removal of sandals or shoes denotes your stand on whose side you’re on

Opening Scripture: Joshua 5:13-15

13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?”14 So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.”And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?” 15 Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.

  • Joshua asked Him the question: “Are you for us or for our adversaries?”
  • God’s answer was neither. Just get on my side!

Here’s the moral of this story:

  • There are only 2 sides: God’s side and the enemy’s side.
  • Stop fighting for God to be your side…Just get on His side
  • Stop fighting for whose way is the best…Just chose God’s way

Comment: I believe it’s time for us to take our shoes off and get on God’s side!

Final Thought: Jesus washed the disciples’ feet (John 13)

  • Before he could wash their feet, do you know what the disciples had to do?Remove their sandals
  • They had to decide who’s side they were going to be on
  • Peter refused to take off his sandals and he said to Jesus: “You shall never wash my feet! If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me” (v.8)
  • Now listen to Peter’s reply: “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head” (v.9)

Conclusion:

What is the Holy Spirit saying to us as a church?
