The Beatitudes – Week 1

June 7, 2026

What does “Beatitude” mean?

The word “Beatitude” comes from the Latin word Beatus, who means “Blessed” “Happy” or “Favored by God”

Weel 1: Blessed Are the Empty.

One of the greatest paradoxes of the Christian life is that God fills those who come to Him empty.

OPENING SCRIPTURE

Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.

He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (Matthew 5:1-4 NIV)

  • Entrance into God’s Kingdom does not begin with strength – it begins with surrender.
  • Entrance into God’s Kingdom does not begin with what we have; it begins with recognizing what we lack.

#1: Empty Hands Receive God’s Kingdom

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:3 NIV)

  • Poor in spirit means recognizing our spiritual poverty before God
  • It is the admission that we cannot save ourselves.

for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:13 NIV)

  • Poor in spirit: spiritual humility, recognizing our need for God
  • This is not weakness – it’s dependence

These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word. (Isaiah 66:2 NIV)

  • God is drawn to humble hearts.
  • Contrition is not weakness; it is spiritual honesty.
  • Humility creates room for God’s presence and power.

#2: Empty Hearts Experience God’s Comfort

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (Matthew 5:4 NIV)

  • Mourning includes grief over loss, pain, and brokenness.
  • Jesus promises comfort, peace, and even joy.
  • Jesus promises comfort, not condemnation.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18 NIV)

  • God does not abandon broken people.
  • He moves closer when hearts are hurting.
  • His presence becomes most real during seasons of grief.

#3: Empty Souls Make Room For God’s Grace

“God resists (opposes) the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6 NKJ)

  • Pride blocks the flow of God’s grace.
  • Humility positions us to receive God’s help.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. (2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV)

  • God’s power shines brightest through our weakness.
  • We do not have to be strong enough on our own.
  • God’s strength becomes available when we acknowledge our limitations.

COMMUNION

Blessed are the empty, for they are the ones God fills.

The bread reminds us that Christ gave His body for our brokenness.

And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19)

The cup reminds us that His blood was shed for our forgiveness.

In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. (Luke 22:20)
