OPENING SCRIPTURE: On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. ² SUDDENLY, THERE WAS A SOUND FROM HEAVEN LIKE THE ROARING OF A MIGHTY WINDSTORM, AND IT FILLED THE HOUSE WHERE THEY WERE SITTING. ³ Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. ⁴ And EVERYONE PRESENT WAS FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. (Acts 2:1-4)

• The miracle in the upper room on that day was not only the speaking in tongues.
• The Holy Spirit came to make you his permanent dwelling
• Did you know that you were created to house the Spirit of The Living God?

¹⁶ I will ask the Father, and he will give you ANOTHER ADVOCATE, WHO WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU. ¹⁷ He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. BUT YOU KNOW HIM, BECAUSE HE LIVES WITH YOU NOW AND LATER WILL BE IN YOU. No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.  (John 14: 15-18)

• Jesus knew we will mess things up. So He sent His divine help, His Holy Spirit.
• HE SENT HIS HOLY SPIRIT not just TO VISIT but to LIVE IN YOU PERMANENTLY .
• The upper room experience was not just a casual encounter. It was fulfillment of prophecies connecting the Old with the New.
• In the OT, Pentecost was the celebration of the law on Mount Sinai. It happened 50 days after Passover, when the angel of death pass over the children in Egypt after seeing the blood of the lamb
• In the NT, Pentecost was the celebration on Grace in the upper room. It also happened 50 days after Passover. Jesus died as the lamb of God. His blood was smeared on the doors of our hearts. So when the enemy sees the blood: “Can’t touch this!”
• After the resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples for 40 days and he told them to wait upon the Holy Spirit.
• They waited 10 days and then on the 50th day, The Holy Spirit came down.

THE GREATEST MIRACLE IN THE UPPER ROOM IS THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME TO EMPOWER THE BELIEVERS

“You will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 NLT)

THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS TO KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG AND KNOW THE TRUTH

“When the Spirit of truth comes, HE WILL GUIDE YOU INTO ALL THE TRUTH. (John 16:13)

• Without the Holy Spirit our moral compass is flawed. The truth is there but we don’t see it.

⁵ At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. ⁶ When they heard the LOUD NOISE, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.⁷ They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee, ⁸ and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! ⁹ 

• In Genesis 11, in the story of The Tower of Babel. They all spoke one language but they were gathered with pride in rebellion against God
• Here in Acts 2, on the Day of Pentecost, they were gathered with humility in submission
• During the tower of Babel, God came down and confused their language and scattered them all over the world
• On the Day of Pentecost, they all came back together and God restore one pure language to them.

THE MIRACLE FROM THE UPPER ROOM IS THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT REVERSED THE CURSE OF BABEL.

• PENTECOST IS THE BLESSING OF UNITY IN THE BODY OF CHRIST REGARDLESS OF YOUR BACKGROUND, ETHNICITY, OR THE COLOR OF YOUR SKIN
• Without the Holy Spirit there is no unity in the body of Christ
• Without the Pentecost there can be no Harvest!
