OPENING STATEMENT: Some decisions adjust your life while some decisions advance your life. But some decisions divide your life into before and after.
Destiny requires a clean break from your past,
OPENING SCRIPTURE
So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. (1 Kings 19:19 NIV)
LESSON #1: God’s Call May Interrupt the Ordinary.
- Destiny Moments are not always announced with trumpets. Sometimes they are the simplest things that interrupt our routine.
- Elijah was plowing his field. He was a work.
HE WAS PLOWING with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. (1 Kings 19:19 NIV)
When God calls, ordinary places become sacred places.
- In one moment, the ordinary field became holy ground.
“Come, follow me… AT ONCE THEY LEFT THEIR NETS.” (Matthew 4:19-20)
Delay can weaken your obedience, but an immediate response creates destiny.
Practical Application: Live ready and stay spiritually sensitive.
LESSON #2: A Half Yes Is Still A No
When destiny calls How will we respond? Yes or will we rationalize it away.
Elijah went up to him and threw his CLOAK around him. (1 Kings 19:19 NIV)
- Elisha did not get a speech from Elijah just a cloak, a mantle.
Elisha said yes to the unknown and risky job as a prophet and left behind a successful farming business.
He was plowing with TWELVE YOKE OF OXEN, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. (1 Kings 19:19 NIV)
- He had state-of-the-art farming equipment.
- He was stable, secure and respected
ELISHA THEN LEFT HIS OXEN AND RAN AFTER ELIJAH. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.” (1 Kings 19:20 NIV)
- Elisha’s response was not a half yes but a full yes.
Practical Application: Let your decision to honor and follow God be firm.
LESSON #3: Burning The Plow Means Burning The Past
HE TOOK HIS YOKE OF OXEN AND SLAUGHTERED THEM. HE BURNED THE PLOWING EQUIPMENT to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. (1 Kings 19:21 NIV)
- He burned the plow. He removed the plan B, the safety, the security.
Forward movement requires release, letting go, surrender. You cannot carry yesterday into tomorrow. You cannot look back.
“Lot’s wife looked back…” (Genesis 19:26 NIV)
Nostalgia can sabotage obedience to follow God.
Practical Application: What “plow” must you burn?
LESSON #4: Serving Precedes Leading
Before Elisha became a prophet, he became a servant.
Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his SERVANT. (1 Kings 19:21 NIV)
Serving prepares the ground for destiny.
Practical Application: Serve faithfully where you are. Promotion is God’s responsibility. Obedience is yours.
LESSON #5: Total Surrender Unlocks Total Blessing
When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?”
“Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied. (2 Kings 2:9 NIV)
- His total surrender led to a destiny- a double portion of God’s anointing to do what he could not do in his own strength.
