Stay & Wait – Pentecost Sunday

Stay & Wait – Pentecost Sunday

May 19, 2024

In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “DO NOT LEAVE Jerusalem, but WAIT for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. (Acts 1:1-4 NIV)

For John baptized with water, but in a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” … you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. (Acts 1:5,8 NIV)

• Jesus commanded them to STAY and WAIT!
• That gift is the power of the Holy Spirit the Father promised to every believer.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity. The holy spirit is God, co-equal with God the Father and God the Son.

Whatever God has called you to do, you cannot do it in your own strength. You need The Power of The Holy Spirit.

“Trying to do the Lord’s work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, then the ministry of Jesus just flows out of you.” ~ Corrie Ten Boom

What is the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives?

#1 He is our: Helper, Advocate, Counselor

These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the HELPER, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (John 14:25-26 NKJ)

• The word “Helper” come from the Greek word: Parakletos – Advocate and Counselor.

#2 He Guides Us to All Truth and Knowledge

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will GUIDE YOU INTO ALL THE TRUTH. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” (John 16:13-15 NIV)

• The unchanging truth flows from The Father to The Son and to The Holy Spirit.

#3 He Helps Us in Our Weakness and Intercedes for US

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27 NIV)

• The Holy Spirit prays according to the will of God. Not ours.

#4 He Helps Us to Bear Fruits

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23 NLT)

• These fruits in our lives provide evidence that The Holy Spirit is at work in us.

#5 He is a Seal in the Lives of Believers

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked IN HIM WITH A SEAL, the promised Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13 NIV)

• That seal tells everyone, especially the enemy that you belong to Christ.

When the DAY OF PENTECOST came, they were ALL TOGETHER IN ONE PLACE. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2:1-4 NIV)

The miracle of the day of Pentecost was not that they spoke in tongues, but the fact they were empowered by the holy spirit.

“Every human comes out of the womb searching for connection.” ~ Dr. Henry Cloud

• It is The Holy Spirit that establishes that connection.

CONCLUSION

• What is the Holy Spirit saying to you through this message?
