The Power of Humility

OPENING PASSAGE: Matthew 21:1-10

The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered. “Who is this?” they asked. (Matthew 21:10)

A King destined for the throne but instead chose the cross.
Jesus came to establish His Kingdom that’s not rooted in pride, power, or prestige, but in servanthood, sacrifice and humility.

What is humility?
• Webster: freedom from pride and arrogance.
• Cambridge: feeling or attitude that you have no special importance that makes you better than others.

# 1: HUMILITY CHOOSES PURPOSE OVER PRESTIGE

“Tell the people of Jerusalem, ‘Look, YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU. He is HUMBLE, riding on a DONKEY (Matthew 21:5 NLT)

• The rightful King that should come on a white war horse but instead came on a borrowed donkey.
• True power lies in fulfilling purpose, not seeking praise.

PURPOSE should always TRUMP PRAISE.
Humility will always keep purpose in check.
1. Jesus embraced His mission, not man’s expectations.
2. He modeled leadership that stoops to serve.

Practical application:
• Ask yourself: Am I pursuing God’s purpose or people’s applause?
• Choose assignments that reflect your calling, not just your capabilities.
• Practice doing small things with great love—volunteer, serve, give generously in secret.

# 2: HUMILITY IS STRENGTH UNDER CONTROL

“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing…” (Philippians 2:6-7 NIV)

• In front of his accusers, he could have defended Himself, but instead He chose humility and silence.
• He chose humility – which is strength under control.

Humility doesn’t mean weakness – it means possessing strength but choosing restraint.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I AM HUMBLE (meek) and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” (Matthew 11:2-30 NLT)

• Meek is not weak – Greek word “Praus” which is used to describe a war horse that has all the power but his power his harnessed by the rider.
• Jesus had all the power and authority, but they were harnessed by The Heaven Father who sent Him.

Blessed are THE MEEK, For they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5 NKJ)

Practical Applications:
• Respond to offense with grace rather than retaliation
• Choose to be teachable even when you’re right.
• Submit your gifts and influence to God’s use, not to your ego.

# 3: HUMILITY OPENS THE DOOR TO EXALTATION

“HUMBLE yourselves before the Lord, and HE WILL LIFT YOU UP.” (James 4:10)

• The donkey ride led to a cross, but the cross led to an empty tomb – resurrection and exaltation.

God’s way up is always down first.

God resists the proud but gives GRACE TO THE HUMBLE (1 Peter 5:5).
