Where God Breathes, Life Follows

Where God Breathes, Life Follows

You can survive without food for weeks, without water for days – but without breath, only minutes. The same is true spiritually – when God’s breath is missing, life slips away, faith becomes faint, and hope remains buried.

That’s exactly where prophet Ezekiel found himself in the Ezekiel chapter 37 – Valley of Dry Bones.

The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. (Ezekiel 37: 1-2 NIV)

  • Here’s the context of this passage: For generations, the people of Israel had walked away from God. Ezekiel is living in exile in Babylon along with thousands of God’s people. They were broken, their homes were destroyed and all their hope was gone. In a vision, God takes Ezekiel to an old battlefield littered with human bones.

He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.” (Ezekiel 37:3 NIV)

  • Ezekiel responded with honesty mixed with faith – God, I don’t see a way, but I know You can make one.

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I WILL MAKE BREATH ENTER YOU, AND YOU WILL COME TO LIFE. (Ezekiel 37:4-5 NIV)

  • Where God breathes, Life follows!
  • This was not just a promise for Israel, but it is a promise for all of us today.
  • It’s a glimpse into what God can do if you feel dry, discouraged, or distant.

The Hebrew word for breath is “Ruach” = the spirit of God.

Ezekiel’s faith was alive once again. He once again believed that God can do the impossible.

So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army. (Ezekiel 37:7-10 NIV)

#1: God’s Breath Revives What Was Dead

It is that same Spirit of God that raised Jesus from the dead. And today that spirit lives in us:

“And if the SPIRIT OF HIM who raised Jesus from the dead is LIVING IN YOU, He who raised Christ will also give Life to your mortal bodies through HIS SPIRIT who LIVES IN YOU.” (Romans 8:11 NIV)

  • The same Spirit that rolled away the stone for Jesus can also roll away the stone to your dead faith, your dead situation.
  • The Breath of God is in you. He’s waiting for you to believe and speak life again.

#2: God’s Breath Restores What Was Broken

The bones in the valley didn’t just live — they came back together. God’s breath brings order to chaos and wholeness to what’s broken.

“He HEALS the BROKENHEARTED and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3 NIV)

  • God is a Healer and Restorernot a distant judge, but a tender Father who comes close to the wounded and begins to mend what life has shattered.
  • The Hebrew word for “heal” here is rapha, which means to mend, to repair, to make whole again.
  • He also restores what then enemy has destroyed.

“I will RESTORE to you the years that the locusts have eaten.” (Joel 2:25 NIV)

  • God does not just fix what’s broken – He makes it better
  • When He restores, He multiplies
  • When He heals, He makes whole.
  • When He breathes, He transforms

#3: God’s Breath Releases New Purpose

When God breathes on you, He doesn’t just revive you; He recommissions you.

“they came to life and stood up on their feet—A VAST ARMY. (Ezekiel 37:10 NIV)

  • Those dead and dry bones were recommissioned to fulfil their purpose- be an army again.
  • Your purpose, your assignment has been dented or has simply collapsed- God just breathed new life on them. You have been recommissioned!
