Walking in step with the Spirit is a lot like marching in a band. The Holy Spirit sets the rhythm, the pace, and the direction. When we follow His lead, our lives produce harmony and beauty.
OPENING SCRIPTURE: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep IN STEP WITH THE SPIRIT.” (Galatians 5:25 NIV)
- The Greek word used for “Keep in step” is “Stoicheo” a military term meaning to “march in line” or “follow in order”.
- A daily choice: to align our lives, actions, and attitudes with the leading of the Holy Spirit.
When we walk in step with the Spirit:
- We do things the world doesn’t always understand.
- We show love when others expect anger.
- We move with Heaven’s rhythm—not the world’s pace.
#1: Walking in Step With The Spirit Means Listening To His Promptings
- The woman with the jar of perfume followed the prompting of the spirit.
While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. (Mark 14:3 NIV)
- Under divine prompting, she did what she did.
- No formal invitation from the host. Not on the guest list. But her invitation was from The Holy Spirit.
- She had no personal agenda. She was in step with the spirit!
- Our movement as believers might seem unorthodox when we are being guided by His truth that lives in us
“But when he, THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH, comes, he WILL GUIDE YOU into all the truth…” (John 16:13 NIV)
- We move in step with the spirit of truth —not the world’s agenda
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “THIS IS THE WAY; WALK IN IT.” (Isaiah 30:21 NIV)

#2: Walking In Step With The Spirit Means Obeying Despite Opposition
She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly. (Mark 14:3-5 NIV)
- Those around her buked her harshly for wasting money.
In step with the Spirit, might mean going against the grain of public opinion. Obedience can be very unpopular —but it is always purposeful.
- The woman chose to obey God and ignore the critics.
“We must OBEY GOD rather than human beings!” (Acts 5:29 NIV)
- Our obedience puts us in step with the Spirit.
“For those who are LED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD are the CHILDREN OF GOD.” (Romans 8:14)
- When we walk in step with the Sprit, we are called children of God.

#3. Walking In Step With The Spirit Means Living For God’s Approval, Not Man’s
“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” (Mark 14:6-9 NIV)
- When you walk in step with the spirit, God will not only defend you but will also justify what you are doing.
- Walking in step with the Spirit means your eyes are on Jesus, not the crowd.
“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?” (Galatians 1:10 NIV)
- We are not seeking men’s approval when we are in step with the spirit.
- The only approval that matters is God’s.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as WORKING FOR THE LORD…” (Colossians 3:23-24 NIV)
- Jesus not only accepted her offering – He memorialize it:
Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, IN MEMORY OF HER.” (Mark 14:9 NIV)
- Even to this day, over 2000 years later, all around the world, we are still talking about that woman and what she did. Why? Because she walked in step with the spirit.
“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep IN STEP WITH THE SPIRIT.” (Galatians 5:25 NIV)
It is not just a theological statement—it’s a daily invitation to live close, move slow, and walk deliberately in line with the Spirit.
